The city of mines and tunnels, famous and renowned for its unique colonial architecture, is the capital of Guanajuato State and a impressive tourist center. It was also capital of the country during the rule of Benito Juárez.

Guanajuato is recognized as a colonial-type town and was the most important mining center of New Spain that flourished with the discovery of rich veins of gold and silver in the seventeenth century.

Guanajuato is famous for its history and culture:

Its history dates back to pre-Columbian times. Its current name derives from frog spelled correctly in Purépecha (native language) as Kuanasïuatu, which means "place of frogs". During the Spanish colonial period achieved great development due to the exploitation of its deposits of gold and silver as I said before. In the early nineteenth century was the scene of one of the most prominent insurgent victories. The territory became a free and sovereign state by decree of 3 February 1824.
